Bush’s Moral Cowardice

Tuesday, August 24th, 2004

Josh Marshall nails this.

Here’s a bit::

A moral coward is someone who lacks the courage to tell the truth, to accept responsibility, to demand accountability, to do what’s right when it’s not the easy thing to do, to clean up his or her own messes. Perhaps we could say that moral bravery is having both the courage of your convictions as well as the courage of your misdeeds.

Who would win the election if it were held today?

Sunday, August 15th, 2004

This website keeps track of who is ahead in the polls in each state and calculates the electoral vote totals. As of August 15 they show Kerry leading the electoral vote count 327 to 211. Holding the mouse pointer over a state gives useful info such as who won the state in the 2000 election and the percentages of the vote each candidate garnered. This week the polls show Kerry with small advantage in some of Bush’s must win states: Ohio, West Virginia, Florida, and Missouri. Bush states that are compettive that should not be include Arkansas, Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina. Let’s move up the election, eh?

Why Bush is falling behind

Check out these two front page stories from Portland, Oregon.

Kerry draws 50,000 to an open event versus “Nearly 2,000 were at the Bush event at a school in Beaverton, where attendance was by invitation only.”

If Bush keeps this up Oregon won’t be a swing state, it’ll be solidly for Kerry.

I have told my staff, I want full cooperation with the Justice Department.
— George W. Bush, 10/06/03

In January, Justice Department investigators asked White House staff members to sign a waiver requesting “that no member of the news media assert any privilege or refuse to answer any questions from federal law enforcement authorities on my behalf or for my benefit.” But in February the Washington Post reported, “Most officials declined to sign the form on the advice of their attorneys.”

…stick a thousand needles in my eye

Friday, August 6th, 2004

I went to the ophthamologist Wednesday. I’ve noticed in the past few months that my vision was deteriorating. I figured a change in my lens prescription would fix things up. The Dr. had good news and bad news. The good news was that the problem with the hole in my right eye’s optic nerve did not get worse and I haven’t lost any peripheral vision. The bad news was that the wrinkle in my right eye’s retina has gotten worse. Everything is blurry when I use just the right eye. When I use both eyes things are still blurry, just not as bad. The Dr. said that their is no lens prescription or medication that can help with the blurriness. He set up an appointment for me to see an eye surgeon. He said the wrinkle is caused by a very small hole in the back of the eye and that scar tissue leaking through the hole has grown on top of the retina and the whole process results in a worsening wrinkle in the retina that can only be corrected with surgery. He said that they would not be able to rid me of the blurriness but the the surgery would keep it from worsening. The surgery is done by poking a couple of needles into the eye, scraping away the scar tissue, sealing the hole, and (cross your fingers) trying to smoothe out the wrinkle a smidge. I’m hoping to get on the surgical list in Marshfield, Wisconsin sometime before Christmas.
