Which way are we tilting?
Wednesday, February 4th, 2004David Frum (not a man I have ever expected to agree with) has tried to defend GWB recently from attacks by other conservatives. In the midst of his argument is this nugget:
America in 2004 is a less ideologically conservative country than it was in 1984. The partisan map has been trending Democrat for a dozen years: Dick Morris points out that Minnesota is the only state in the Union that has grown more Republican since 1988. Conservatives sometimes forget that George Bush won 500,000 fewer votes than Al Gore in 2000; the Bush political operation can never afford to let that fact slip out of mind.
While I hope that is true, I have to wonder about it. If, for example, the country is tipping toward Democrats, then why do Republicans keep picking up more governorships, Senate seats, and House seats? Why has the public allowed GWB to to set a financial course destined to bankrupt the country? Why are we fighting a war to eliminate the non- existent threat of mythical Iraqi WMD (or should I say, WMDPRA)? I coud go on but now it’s your turn…
